Ja, is goed nieuws hé. Ik ben benieuwd of IBM nu zelf ook Altivec gaat ondersteunen. Opvallend trouwens dat ze het in het persbericht Altivec(TM) noemen. Ik dacht dat Moto die naam bezat en dat ze daarom Apple's naam 'Velocity Engine' zouden gebruiken.

Het ligt er een beetje aan om welke taak het gaat, maar over het algemeen is de PPC per klokcycle sneller dan een Pentium. De PPC blinkt bijvoorbeeld uit in Floating Point operaties. Je moet maar eens kijken bij distributed.net. Bij het kraken van RC5 versleuteling wint de PPC dik. Vergelijk maar eens de Intel Statistieken met de PPC Statistieken.

Eehm…ik ben er niet helemaal in thuis, maar het gaat hier om de aangekondgde 64-bits processor. Was dat niet een stapje verder dan de huidige generatie (dacht dat we nu draaiden op 32 bits?) en had dat geen gevolgen voor alle software die opnieuw aangepast moet worden? Of heb ik de klok horen luiden etc…

Maar wel snel (nog geen Israëlische DNA-computer, maar toch…)

Heeft zeker gevolgens, maar de migratie is te doen, want als het OS 32 bit blijft, hoef je niets aan de software te doen. Pas daarna moet je klussen, al zal dat meevallen.

Naar mijn bescheiden mening is dit een ppc-cpu die enkel dus in ibm-servers wordt gebruikt en die niet ècht voor apple bedoelt is (dat heb ik toch al op vele forums gelezen dat de beide ppc-cpu's niet verward mogen worden).

Graag bevestiging of weerlegging van deze stelling

In de pSeries zit momenteel de Power4 van IBM, en dat is geen kinderachtige processor, en die verwacht je niet snel in een desktop, zelfs niet een PowerMac tower. De 970 is [i:a079407d97]gebaseerd[/i:a079407d97] op die Power4, het [i:a079407d97]is[/i:a079407d97] niet een Power4. Dat is het belangrijke verschil. IBM ontwikkelt deze processor voor de low range servers, en daar past de PowerMac dus echt wel tussen. De verwarring is dat mensen denken dat de 970 een processor is voor hig end machines, en dat is 'ie dus niet.

Op Ars Technica staat het zo verwoord:

[i:d40084e6d1]As it turns out, at some tasks the PPC 970 will actually outperform its big brother, the Power4, because the 970 is made to run at higher clock rates. Apparently, in order to increase the reliability of the Power4 for the high-end server market, IBM used much thicker gate oxides on the chip’s transistors. The trade-off for this decreased failure rate and improved reliability was that the Power4’s transistors have slower switching speeds, so even with process shrinks it’s harder to push the design to higher clock speeds. Since the 970 is made for the desktop market, there’s no need for such measures and therefore the new chip’s clock speed will scale much higher than the Power4’s. In sum, the 970 is made to be faster, cheaper, and significantly less reliable than the Power4. (Of course, when I say “significantly less reliable than the Power4,” you have to understand that this puts the 970’s product life and failure rate on par with other mainstream CPUs, since the Power4’s increased gate oxide thickness makes it significantly more reliable than most mainstream CPUs.) Bovenstaande is nog uit de tijd van de 1.8 Ghz als grens; the future is bright...

Tel daar bij op max. 4 terabyte geheugen, 900 Mhz DDR bus, 970 voor IBM Linux en Mac OS X systemen - staan we/ze gezellig samen tegenover Intel/MS.

Hmm, moet toch Marty McFly eens mailen… :wink:

Bij het nieuwe RC5-72 maakt de G4 anders weer helemaal niks klaar. M’n PIII 600 draait daarbij net zo hard als m’n G4 1.0GHz…
Maar dat heeft waarschijnlijk te maken met het feit dat die core niet geschreven is voor de G4 ofzo :cry:
